A little bird was flying south for the winter. It got so cold it froze up and fell to the ground in a large field.
While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As
it lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it
was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and
happy, and soon began to sing for joy.
A passing cat heard the little bird singing, and came to investigate.
Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow
dung, and promptly dug him out-and then ate him.
The morals of the story are:
1. Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy.
2. Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
3. When you're in deep shit, keep your mouth shut!
You know sometimes you find yourself in a place you didn't expect to be and end up having a banging night out. Well one March evening last year in I had such a night. Wow how time flies.
I saw this picture and had a flood of memory and decided to share it with the masses.
In there is a spot called Cafe Wha? My wife and I discovered this place by pure
chance one night after searching for somewhere to let loose.
You see, it was our anniversary and we went to NY on a shopping trip and to see
some friends etc. Anyway, we had a long day and after virtually melting our
wallets we decided, very much at the last minute to at least go out and have a
night out in NY, since all we had done up until then is shop. That’s one
of the things I love about NY… you can go do something at pretty much any time,
which is something that in the UK we are painfully unable to do, unless you are
living in London and even then your pushing it.
So we called a cab and sheepishly asked the guy to take us to a night spot - wherever he felt we would have a good time, not knowing whether this was a big ask or not. I have to say that he was great. We drove about 10 blocks and tried one place, but it was already closed, bearing in mind it was close to midnight I think. The cabbie was cool and said he could think of somewhere else. I seem to remember it was near St. Patrick’s Day because there were a load of decorated Irish bars and lots of people looking a little lashed in various spots along the way. Coming from the UK you'll understand if I didn't fancy being in a pissed up pub environment, so when we noticed the sign Café Wha? we decided to give it a go.
What a great night!!!
The one thing I LOVE about American bars it the whole civilized idea of pouring you a proper drink…i.e. none of this optics business – for those in the states who like me think the idea of a trickle in your glass is foolishness…that’s optics for ya. Now I am a Makers Mark man and wifey likes the odd tipple from time to time so we were more than happy when directed down the stairs and to a seat where this well mannered guy took our orders (as opposed to literally growing older at the bar as you would in the UK) and returned about 5 minutes later with a very healthy couple of drinks, as in Half a Glass!!!
It had a fairly student atmosphere at first with the Abercrombie massive exercising there lungs to the live band that was cranking out tunes from the middle of the room. Man they could play, a really talented bunch. Every member of this seven or so piece band had a solo on there own with the support of the band of course. So we sat bobbing our heads for about half an hour until one of the backing singers decided to do a Mary J cover of ‘Real Love’… I distinctly remember being blown away by the rapping that the guy on the keyboard (who looked like the lead singer of Hanson) was doing. Well now I discovered why they called it WHA???? I guess the Makers had kicked in by then because we were up on our feet for the rest of that night. Wicked!!! We kicked it until the early hours and went back to our hotel buzzing.
I couldn’t have had a better night. So if you ever get a chance… Go check out Café Wha? I’d be interested to know if everybody else enjoys it as much as we did.
What's one of your favorite quotes?

Gosh there are so many...ask me on another day I may have a different response, but one that immediately springs to mind which I really like is by Mark Twain who said....
"Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on the heel that crushed it"
Have you ever played matchmaker? How did it go?
Thinking about it I believe that I have a couple of times as it goes. My success rate is pretty good. Both are married now.
I had a disturbing dream this morning and I feel like sharing it with y'all.
So I was trapped at the top of the mast of a ship... the massive old sea faring wooden kind of vessel. It had a huge mast which had a cross beam type effect at the very top where I found myself sat, or more accurately perched on one side of the beam with just enough space to fit my butt on it, whilst clinging on to the main middle section of the mast itself. The middle section was thick enough for me to literally wrap my arms around at the centre. I remember being SO high up that I was certainly scared of falling and I had the feeling of being uncomfortable with the fact that I was hardly sitting in the most secure position as it meant that I really had to balance myself in order not to fall. There was no way I could have moved for instance.
In the mean time although it did not appear to be sinking, below me was
the outline of this huge ship to which the mast belonged, but at the same time
it was almost completely submerged with water. I had my eyes reluctantly fixed
on a patch of sea to the left of the ship because I was waiting for Ali Vincent
to surface from the water. [I used to know this receptionist at work called
Ali Vincent who left to set up a restaurant with her husband maybe a year or
more ago– she was a lovely person but not someone I can really say I have
thought about since].
It appeared that given the time that had passed since I saw her enter the water, she must have died because she was not coming up to the surface. The sea looked so dark and blue, so vast and obviously deep. I couldn't see any way out of this situation and remember feeling so much remorse at the fact that she must be gone... yet almost instantly feeling grateful at the fact that my wife was o.k. She had appeared in an earlier part of this dream and was somehow set to be on this mission with me to save Ali. I made my wife promise to stay where she was because I knew that she couldn’t make it through the water to the surface, as she isn’t the best swimmer in the world. The object seemed to be to get up to the surface from down below – or even from another place but were transported through the water on the other side - It began to remind of the scene from Poltergeist where Carol-Anne is being pulled through the wormhole...
[Weird I know] It felt like we were supposed to all set off at the same time and make it to the surface, but Ali had not come up yet.
The weirdest part about this dream was that it was not until I was up the top of the mast clinging on for dear life that I realised that I had had this dream before. I remembered distinctly looking over the edge at that deep blue water thinking just how blue and vast and deep it looked. I remember being frightened at the thought that the wind (which was picking up) would toss me into the sea at any time and just as I began to feel like I was slipping...
..."good morning baby"...my wife had came in to wake me having bought me a drink and a kiss. Her enthusiasm for every new day is really something else. She is one of those people that burst into a room talking about what the day has to offer. There is always a positive comment about the sun or even the rain.
On
the contrary I am one of those people that you should'nt try to talk to before
10am.
Still that’s why I love her.
What's a leap of faith to you? Have you ever taken one?
A leap of faith to me is taking a chance on love...
I moved to the Midlands from Brighton in the South. I loved Brighton as it was my University
town. I moved for my (now) wife’s job, which was up here! 8 years later I
think the place has finally grown on me, but I still miss the South and certainly
miss the Sea.
GREAT MOVIE, LOVED IT, WOULD RECOMMEND IT
O.K. for anybody who, like me, is not particularly into musicals I can
understand why they would be down with this movie. I actually loved the
fact that you finally have a virtually all black cast staring in a musical
worthy of the stage for many more years to come. This cast is not just
any cast, your talking:
- Jamie Foxx
- Eddie Murphy
- Danny Glover
- Beyonce Knowles
- Jennifer Hudson
Jamie Foxx - deserves more success that he has gotten over the years in my opinion, given that he has been a fantastic comedian as well as singer and actor for many years. I can tell you many people in the that I have spoken to (other than those who have seen the movie ’Ray’), don't even know who Jamie Foxx is. If you have ever seen this guy's standup comedy it's hilarious. Find it and check it out on YouTube. I have cried with laughter many a time. He has a fantastic singing voice of his own worthy of a music career (in my opinion); appears to be a great all round guy as well.
Eddie Murphy – plays James "Thunder" Early in this and I think it's one of the best roles I have seen Eddie Murphy perform. It’s not about him changing character a million times and cracking jokes or having multiple personalities, this is about Eddie not only singing with that great voice that he has often hidden behind comedy, but his portrayal of James "Thunder" Early was in reality a very sensitive role and reminded me of the godfather of soul himself - the late James Brown. He conveyed the emotion of his character so well that I believe he definitely deserved an Oscar for the role. A really cracking performance.
Beyonce Knowles – Does what she does best as far as singing is concerned, but I think that you can’t take away from the fact that she really worked hard to do a great acting job in this role and she pulled it off. Yes she has a great voice, but this wasn’t about her and her alone. She interacted with the rest of the cast really well and it was great to forget that she was Beyonce for a while and think of her as Deena. Also great to see that even though she was pivotal to the story, she was not the be all and end all of this movie.
Danny Glover – WOW! I loved seeing him on screen again. Not the most challenging role nor the most dialog, but non the less he played the fatherly Marty Madison role well and I think added a little something to this movie.
And
finally...
Jennifer Hudson – Most of the recent press have given Jennifer Hudson the most props for this movie and I guess I can’t disagree with that. Before I went to see it I almost resented the fact that this ex American Idol was getting more credit for this, given the rest of the cast were on paper far more deserving as far as time served is concerned…BUT… they were all right! Jennifer Hudson was Great in this movie with a capital G, particularly given that she was (if I am not mistaken) virtually unheard of this time last year or a couple of years ago or something. I know very little about her personally but I do know that she can act, and see can definitely sing. Beyonce watch out ah!
Go see it for yourself, but I can definitely recommend it.
Thanks strixaluco; much as this sort of thing doesn't float my boat, I had to know didn't I... so here I am apparently.

You are The Emperor
Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person.
The Emperor is the great authority figure of the Tarot, so it represents
fathers, father-figures and employers. There is a lot of aggression and violence
too.
The Emperor naturally follows the Empress. Like an infant, he is filled with enthuiasm, energy, aggression. He is direct, guileless and all too often irresistible. Unfortunately, like a baby he can also be a tyrant. Impatient, demanding, controlling. In the best of circumstances, he signifies the leader that everyone wants to follow, sitting on a throne that indicates the solid foundation of an Empire he created, loves and rules with intelligence and enthusiasm. But that throne can also be a trap, a responsibility that has the Emperor feeling restless, bored and discontent.
