You know sometimes you find yourself in a place you didn't expect to be and end up having a banging night out. Well one March evening last year in I had such a night. Wow how time flies.
I saw this picture and had a flood of memory and decided to share it with the masses.
In there is a spot called Cafe Wha? My wife and I discovered this place by pure
chance one night after searching for somewhere to let loose.
You see, it was our anniversary and we went to NY on a shopping trip and to see
some friends etc. Anyway, we had a long day and after virtually melting our
wallets we decided, very much at the last minute to at least go out and have a
night out in NY, since all we had done up until then is shop. That’s one
of the things I love about NY… you can go do something at pretty much any time,
which is something that in the UK we are painfully unable to do, unless you are
living in London and even then your pushing it.
So we called a cab and sheepishly asked the guy to take us to a night spot - wherever he felt we would have a good time, not knowing whether this was a big ask or not. I have to say that he was great. We drove about 10 blocks and tried one place, but it was already closed, bearing in mind it was close to midnight I think. The cabbie was cool and said he could think of somewhere else. I seem to remember it was near St. Patrick’s Day because there were a load of decorated Irish bars and lots of people looking a little lashed in various spots along the way. Coming from the UK you'll understand if I didn't fancy being in a pissed up pub environment, so when we noticed the sign Café Wha? we decided to give it a go.
What a great night!!!
The one thing I LOVE about American bars it the whole civilized idea of pouring you a proper drink…i.e. none of this optics business – for those in the states who like me think the idea of a trickle in your glass is foolishness…that’s optics for ya. Now I am a Makers Mark man and wifey likes the odd tipple from time to time so we were more than happy when directed down the stairs and to a seat where this well mannered guy took our orders (as opposed to literally growing older at the bar as you would in the UK) and returned about 5 minutes later with a very healthy couple of drinks, as in Half a Glass!!!
It had a fairly student atmosphere at first with the Abercrombie massive exercising there lungs to the live band that was cranking out tunes from the middle of the room. Man they could play, a really talented bunch. Every member of this seven or so piece band had a solo on there own with the support of the band of course. So we sat bobbing our heads for about half an hour until one of the backing singers decided to do a Mary J cover of ‘Real Love’… I distinctly remember being blown away by the rapping that the guy on the keyboard (who looked like the lead singer of Hanson) was doing. Well now I discovered why they called it WHA???? I guess the Makers had kicked in by then because we were up on our feet for the rest of that night. Wicked!!! We kicked it until the early hours and went back to our hotel buzzing.
I couldn’t have had a better night. So if you ever get a chance… Go check out Café Wha? I’d be interested to know if everybody else enjoys it as much as we did.
